Last year I curated a show at Ojai’s music festival. The festival director Ara Guzelimian decided to entitle this show “early music” because of the musical content, but also referring to the fact that the performance was at 10am on a Sunday morning.
I loved the early-music-early idea and told him that part of my morning routine at home is to put on instrumental 17th century Italian music as the first sound to caress my ears, even before I make coffee.
With that thought in mind I want to share with you this playlist I made a while back for our Patreon supporters. It’s 1 hour and 40 minutes of beautiful instrumental sounds that range from late 16th century madrigals with diminutions to a complete Corelli violin sonata.
This has been a month in which I have shared thoughts and ideas about 17th century Italian music, from my record club (some pieces from that album are also here), to my piece on early music and historical performance practice. I thought this would be a good addition to the conversation.
I hope you will enjoy this music and you can find the whole playlist here
(The widget here below usually only plays a preview so make sure you click on the link here above for the full playlist)
In case you are curious about the concert I curated for the Ojai festival, you can find a nice video recording of the whole show here below. Mind you this is not an early music concert per se, but an early music inspired concert that features some amazing musicians from the Silk Road Ensemble, the Attacca Quartet etc…
Here the description of the show and personnel:
Francesco Turrisi curator and keyboards | Rhiannon Giddens vocals | Wu Man pipa
Kayhan Kalhor kamancheh | Joshua Stauffer theorbo | Attacca QuartetA program imagined specifically for the magical atmosphere of Sunday morning in Libbey Bowl, playing on the two ideas of very old music and music for the first hours of the day. Francesco Turrisi curates and introduces music ranging from thousand-year-old works for solo pipa, to Renaissance consort music, from ancient Persian melodies to modal jazz improvisations.
Thanks for the Early Music early this day as well. Interesting group! I appreciate the video presentation as well; nice to see you and Rhiannon working together at close range.
Thanks for sharing this video! It is a treat after not being able to make it to Ojai or Big Ears.
