Yes, there is a huge tradition of bagpipes everywhere in central and southern Italy...there are 27 distinct types of bagpipes just in Italy!
Let us not forget that the oldest bagpipe we know of was in modern day Turkey...the association with northern europe and the british isles is waaaay more recent. Maybe I'll write a piece one of these days!
So much I didn't know here. The urlo sound definitely reminds me of the cuíca in Brazil, but I'm guessing it'd be hard to change the pitch as much on a tambourine?
