I was very excited when the first Ipod came out. I loved the idea of stuffing it with music and letting it shuffle. The result was like a crazy playlist from a radio show that a radio station would never agree to play! Baroque recitativo breaking into hip hop, jazz fading into Turkish Ottoman music.
Today, many years later I recreate that iPod shuffle effect in an even larger scale on Spotify, where I have 5 massive 10K tracks playlists (called epic collection 1-5). This exhilarating and at times schizophrenic way of listening to music has become my go to when I am at home and busy doing things (I also still sit down and listen to full records and cd’s!). My brain and my ears are always very tuned to sound, so even if I am busy cooking or doing something else, a part of my brain is always listening. I don’t like background music, I like music that stops me on my tracks and makes go: “wait what is this??”, and this system really works for that! Whenever I see an interesting album I add it to one of those collections, so there is actually a very balanced alternation of music I know well and a lot of music that I have never heard before.
From this concept came the idea for this podcast. It’s the radio show I always dreamt of hosting. I don't curate these sets of tunes, I curate the playlists that they came from. I listen to the songs as they appear and give you some thoughts, impressions and facts afterwards. I am surprised as you are of what will come next!
Disclaimer: this is an experiment and the first time I record something like this. I had fun making it as I love talking about music. It is entirely recorded and edited on my iPad using the Spotify podcast creator app and It certainly needs fine tuning, so please do let me know if you find it interesting and/or like it and if so I will keep working on this format.
Unfortunately this show is only available on Spotify as the copyright issues with using full tracks on a podcast are quite complicated and I don’t have the means to be able to do it on a separate platform. So if you don’t have a Spotify account you will only be able to access a preview of the tracks…I apologise for that but there is nothing I can do about it at this stage.
Listen to the first episode of my IPod shuffle here
I have also embedded the Spotify link here below but for me it only plays the spoken parts and not the full episode with music. Does it work for you?
Thank you for this unexpected gift. It is a delicious treat!
Francesco, I have the same habits. I actually have an iPod from 2008 with about 20,000 tunes in it, and I leave it on shuffle when I go for long drives. As a matter of principle, I despise Spotify, so I do not use it (even though my music happens to be in it - not by my choice). As far as copyright issues when sharing the music, I do that in my Zoom online classes, instead of podcasts. It works. Grazie!
