Thank you for this great music nerd post! I love "early music" (especially Jordi Savall) but didn't know any of the context you explain here, other than "played on period instruments". As a non-musician with no music education, I find your reflections on different aspects of musical interpretation and performance especially fascinating.
For whatever reason (human nature? cultural educational traditions?), "Know everything" often results in paralyzing the "do your thing" muscles. It's quite common in literary academia, where deep study of the creative art you passionately admire can result in an inability to create any yourself. Then there are some who refuse to invest any energy in knowing about what came before, not wanting to be inhibited by the knowledge; but I'm not sure what they use for fuel when their own spark dims.
It’s a weird thing that I do not understand…I once had an argument with a classical violinist that claimed that if you analyse Bach from a harmony and composition points of view you’re not gonna be able to play it properly 😂.
That’s some post romantic bs there…I wish people would take the craft more seriously and realise that music is not all about god whispering in your ears…for me the more informed you are, the better you’re gonna play…but yes agree on the fact that some people are not able to make those two sides coexist
Wow. Thanks for walking us thru your explorations
